Our primary focus has been in the residential construction field. We build new custom homes, remodel existing homes and renovate older homes. We also create new decks, patios and fences along with constructing greenhouses and other unique landscape architecture. We have also enjoyed the challenges associated with light custom commercial construction, with projects like the reconstruction of a local church, the renovation a downtown business complex, and the repair of an aging storefront.
Besides offering an extensive measure of construction experience, we also offer full design and permitting services. We work with the initial concepts provided by our clients to create plans that encompass their diverse needs. We provide construction budgets and timelines that establish the various construction layers involved. We walk the plans through the permitting process. From inception to completion, we make the experience as uncomplicated and enjoyable as possible.
Our goal is quite simple. We strive to provide quality craftsmanship and personal service on each and every project. We consider ourselves a "bags-on" construction company, which means we are on-site working alongside employees and supervising subcontractors rather than sitting at a desk coordinating the work without direct, personal involvement. We make ourselves available 7 days a week through site-meetings, phone calls and e-mails. For our out-of-town clients, we provide digital pictures and detailed notes for project tracking. We happily offer spare tool bags to our hands-on clients, or we offer a comfortable seat to those that would prefer to watch. It is our hope that our clients feel as though they are as much a part of the project as they choose to be.
We are sensitive to our clients that would prefer to live in their home while it is under construction. We make every effort to protect belongings, segregate work areas to inhibit dust and debris from settling into the existing areas, and remove debris from the site promptly. We ensure that our actions, and the actions of our employees, are respectful to our clients’ needs. We do not allow smoking on the job, nor will we be found loitering around our trucks at the end of the day. There will be no loud radios or raucous behavior. We take into account the character of the neighborhood, and make every effort to avoid negatively impacting neighboring homes and families.
At Wesley Torell Construction, Inc., we are committed to delivering exceptional service and results. With a focus on customer satisfaction and a dedication to excellence, we have established ourselves as a leading contractor in the industry. I started as a General Contractor in 1996 with the simple concept of providing quality craftsmanship and personal service to my clients. I was fortunate to have Wendi join my life and my business in 1998. For over 2 years, we worked together side by side, discovering that our passion for construction was as strong as our passion for each other. In the summer of 2000, we decided to start a family of our own. As Wendi wished to remain a hard working contributor to the business, she transitioned from the field to the office and established our residential design and permitting service. While undergoing the rigors of pregnancy and motherhood over the past several years, Wendi has been the backbone of our design and administration efforts.
I have been in the construction trade for over 20 years. However, construction has been a part of my life since childhood. My father, now a semi-retired contractor and master craftsman, had me cleaning trenches and hauling debris when I was a boy. I began my official career in construction in my late teens, working both with my father and with a reputable local contractor. I eventually moved to Sonoma County to complete my college degree, and I then settled into Marin County north of San Francisco. While attending evening classes, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to spend my days working with an amazing local contractor that specialized in high-end construction in the Craftsman and Victorian styles. I became a project foreman at age 26, and I was given the responsibility of coordinating million-dollar renovations. My return to the Central Coast in 1997 provided an opportunity to re-establish local roots and grow a successful business. I utilize an intense work ethic taught to me by my father. I also find guidance through the love and support of my wonderful wife and two amazing sons.
I have been in the construction trades for over 10 years, but construction has been a part of my life since childhood. My late grandmother was a general contractor and residential designer in Cambria for many years. I spent many after-school hours cleaning jobsites and learning the trades from the various workers on-site. I spent time helping with carpentry, electrical and painting all before I reached high school. My grandmother also started me in the direction of residential design, teaching the basics of spatial layout and environmental impact. My late grandfather was a building contractor in LA County, and my brother and uncle are currently contractors.
I started working with Wes in 1998. We spent the next two years on foundations, framing and finish work for remodels and renovations. When we decided to start a family, I wanted to remain an integral part of the business, so I suggested that I could take over the administration duties. I also suggested that we add residential design to our plate. Through the use of a CAD system, I am able to produce floor plans and elevations to go along with site plans and project details. I continue to assist Wes with project scheduling and subcontractor supervision while I also address the design work and my duties as mother to my two beautiful boys.
Whether the project is a new home, a home renovation or a simple deck addition, we apply our years of experience and our passion for construction to each and every project. In our past 27 years in business in SLO County, it has been our good fortune to work with many wonderful clients, most of whom we now count as friends.

"We consider ourselves very fortunate to have worked with Wesley Torell Construction on the renovation of our small inn. Virtually rebuilt from the ground up, the project required a holistic approach that included interiors, exteriors and landscaping. The results are truly astounding. Throughout the project, Wes and Wendi provided invaluable guidance and insight; particularly during times of unexpected hiccups. They showed great care and professionalism in every aspect of the construction - from the biggest things to the minutiae, nothing was overlooked. The process was comfortable and wonderfully collaborative. We were very appreciative of the consistent, thorough communication and helpful updates and reminders. The results prove 100% that we made the right choice. Our guest feedback regarding the renovation is A+ across the board and that feedback fuels continued success in our business."

"Wes and Wendi Torell are the best. They have done a variety of work on our home over the past 14 years, and all of it was done with great care and a commitment to quality, both on the inside and out. Whether it was new upgrades in the kitchen and bathrooms, new decking and fencing, or new windows and skylights, we have been very pleased with the outcome. We highly recommend Torell Construction."

"I originally met Wes when he was remodeling a house on Nottingham. He was always there first thing in the morning and I was very impressed with the quality of work. I made a mental note to call Wes when we were ready to remodel our kitchen.
A few months later we discovered a leak in our bathroom wall. I called Wes and luckily he had some down time between projects to come by that day. I ended up needing to replace both interior and exterior walls along with flooring. The bathroom repairs segued into a kitchen remodel as well as new flooring throughout most of the house.
I can’t say enough good things about Wes. I'm impressed with his integrity and work ethic. Wes has excellent sub-contractors and was always on site throughout the job. He also did a lot of the prep work himself as well as creating beautiful stair railings and a stained glass window frame.
Wes has been in the business a long time. Nothing seems to phase him and we never saw him lose his composure. He has excellent people skills and projects a sense of calmness and positivity. I'm a very organized and goal-oriented person so I especially appreciated his weekly (and sometimes daily) scheduling updates.
I also want to give a shout out to Wendi. She is multi-talented and definitely helped with the design aspect. I knew what I wanted but wasn’t always sure how to achieve it. Wendi guided me through the process. We're extremely happy with our new kitchen and flooring.
Wes and Wendi are the perfect combination of design and construction. I would not hesitate to call them again for future projects and highly recommend them for any construction/remodeling needs."

"Wes and Wendi helped us with a large, and complicated, renovation and addition. They are honest, reliable, diligent, trustworthy, and meticulous. The work completed on our home exceeded our expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed working with Wes and Wendi on our project!"

"We really enjoyed working with Torell Construction on our home update and remodel. It was fantastic having a contractor who devoted themselves to our project rather than juggling multiple projects at once. And the fact that Wes and Wendi personally performed or oversaw all of the work themselves made it such a smooth process. They revitalized our 40 year old neglected structure with up-to-date materials and amenities. It’s like having a brand new house!"

"We said we would never take on new construction, but when we were faced with that overwhelming prospect, we were fortunate to meet Wes and Wendi Torell. From the beginning, Torell Construction helped us understand the scope of our project, the cost of building our home, and each step along the way. Updates were weekly, and sometimes daily, with pictures to help us see progress and make decisions as we were long-distance owners. They are the perfect team of linear thinking and creative vision. Wendi can envision and draw up anything, and Wes can come up with any solution needed and build everything. Every idea we had, they finessed and executed. We wound up with a home that is beyond anything we could have imagined. Every detail was covered. The Torells also have amazing subs they work with, and we now have relationships with professionals who will help us with continued service in the future. This has been a fantastic collaborative experience."

"Wes and Wendi did the near-complete remodel of our tiny little vacation house on Lodge Hill in 2010-2011. We provided them nothing more than a "vision statement" of what we wanted, and they made it happen. They worked with us through the concept, design, budgeting, planning, permitting and finally construction process with a single-minded focus on delivering us the quality home we wanted - within our budget. They always were attentive, responsive, focused and committed. Because at that time it was a second home, and we were only occasionally on site, so they made sure we were updated, including by regular reports and photos. They were the exact opposite of the horror stories you hear about contractors. Of course, once we had this great home we had to move here! To this day we cannot name more than a couple of things we wish we had done differently -- and none of them have anything to do with the Torells. They are a fantastic design-build team who we unreservedly endorse."

A. We work with your ideas if you already have a general idea of what you want, or we can provide a diversity of ideas in terms of residential style. We have worked with all manner of materials and can help identify those materials that would best fit your selected style. We then translate all information to the page and create a detailed set of plan documents in a computer-drawn format (CAD) for your review and approval. From there, we then coordinate the involvement of our service providers, from soils and structural engineering to archaeological reviews (if needed) and Title 24 calculations. Once we have gathered all of the necessary information, we take the completed plan package to your city or county planning and building department and start the permit application process. Once the permit is approved, we are there to receive the approved permit package and break the good news to you that your project is ready to break ground.
~ Wes and Wendi
A. There are a diversity of ways in which to structure the pricing and billing for a project. We can provide a comprehensive bid package if you have a complete set of plans. We can also provide detailed estimates and work on a cost-plus basis. It should be noted that we offer very competitive hourly rates.
~ Wes
A. Many of our clients do not live here full-time. We keep a detailed project log with media documentation in the form of pictures and, if requested, video walk-throughs. We are available seven days a week for site meetings, e-mails and phone calls. There should never be a moment in which a client feels uncomfortable at the idea of being disassociated from the project.
~ Wendi
A. We typically invoice on a bi-monthly basis for time-and-materials work and at the first of each month for bid work. If your project is based on a cost-plus format, we provide detailed invoices with copies of all receipts for subcontracted work and materials supplied. You will find very few other contractors that go to such effort to ensure that the client is well-informed.
~ Wendi
A. While we can literally provide everything for a project, it can be considered that we specialize in complex projects. We enjoy a good challenge more than most. We truly appreciate a complicated roof system or a foundation that meanders across a sloped property. We also enjoy providing detailed trimwork in the Crafstman and Victorian styles.
~ Wes
A. Quite literally, we will do any manner of construction work. No project is too small (or too big!).
~ Wes
